What's the difference between balm and lotion?

Balm has a creamy texture, contains no alcohol, and moisturizes intensively. Lotion is more liquid, often with alcohol, and feels more refreshing. For dry or sensitive skin, choose balm. Truefitt & Hill and Mühle have excellent balms.

When do I apply balm?

Immediately after shaving, on clean, dry skin. Rinse with cold water to close pores, pat dry gently, and apply balm with light motions. Don't rub vigorously.

Which balm for sensitive skin?

Mühle Sensitive and Castle Forbes Lavender are ideal for sensitive skin — alcohol-free, with natural soothers. Baxter of California contains aloe and vitamin E. Avoid products with strong fragrances.

Can I use it daily?

Yes, balm is for every shave. Moisturizing ingredients help skin recover. If you shave daily, a good balm prevents razor bumps and dryness. Taylor of Old Bond Street is light for daily use.

Do I need moisturizer too?

Most balms provide enough moisture on their own. If you have very dry skin, you can apply moisturizer after 5-10 minutes. Castle Forbes is very rich and usually doesn't need additional product.

What scents are available?

Wide variety: classics like Sandalwood and Lavender (Taylor), fresh like 1805 (Truefitt), woody and spicy. Mühle also has unscented options for those wearing cologne.
